As part of the IDEAS Technology studio's Immersive World Building project, we created a Virtual Reality game application inspired by Olafur Eliasson's The Weather Project (2003). The focus was on analyzing the aesthetic elements of the 2D image of the reference work and reinterpreting it into a 3D space. Using procedural modeling software and a game engine, we built a digital environment that is realistic and responsive to user gestures.
In the reference work, the theme of 'the change of the environment according to the light' was derived, and it was expanded from an indoor space to an actual natural environment. The user is supposed to start exploring as the source of light by following the instructions 'Follow the Light.' As it climbs and descends on the rough surface, the light turns cold colors as it reaches the surface. The fog surrounding the surroundings further emphasizes the light dispersion and the sense of distance. Particles emanating from the light serve as a reminder to the user where the light is. When the user gets close to the light, they can finally adjust the light with a few hand gestures. Pulling it with both hands changes the size of the light, and touching the light with one hand changes the light's physical properties. The series of journeys following the light provides time for users to appreciate the digital environment of virtual reality. Several hand gestures given to reach the light help the user to participate more actively in the game environment.
To create a realistic environment, objects were modeled and animated in Maya. This was imported into Unity and the elements for VR games were constructed. The terrain, light, and particles from light were created in Maya. In addition, all the elements needed for the game, such as water, fog, and text, were all worked in Unity. To capture the VR screen, the RockVR plug-in was used.
사용자는 'Follow the Light.'
